French Lace Texture Tips

Adding texture to walls is a good way to add dimension to otherwise drab walls. French lace texture, also known as Spanish lace texture, is one way to spruce up the walls while covering any imperfections or markings that the walls may already have. Adding this textured finish will ensure that your walls never look the same again.
Tape around the windows, doors and outlet faces to prepare the area. You will also want to tape over any seams if you are working with fresh drywall. Apply two to three coats of joint compound over these taped seams and any nail spots that you find.
Consider using drywall mud instead of just textured paint for this project. This offers more dimension to your surface.
Apply the drywall mud directly to fresh drywall. This type of surface will allow the drywall to adhere easily to it.
If the wall is already painted, make sure that it is clean and free of any oil or residue. Prepare this kind of surface with primer before proceeding.
Any glossy finish paint that is already on the walls before the project should be sanded down before applying the French lace texture.
Apply a thin coat of drywall mud to the prepared wall for French lace texture. Roll over this wall mud with a tight bag roller while it is still wet, and then knock down the surface to smooth out some of the texture.
Always paint over drywall mud to protect and seal it. You don't want it to collect dirt, dust or debris on the porous surface. Make sure that the drywall mud is dried before you paint over it. Drying times may vary on the paint, so read the paint instructions for further information.
You don't want to do French lace texture on wallpaper. This will ruin the wallpaper, and eventually it will tear away from the wall.
